Fishing Provides Physical and Mental Health Benefits

As the head women’s soccer coach for Mississippi State University, Tom Anagnost manages all aspects of the women’s soccer program including recruiting players and helping team members to improve their skills. Outside of work, Tom Anagnost maintains an interest in various sporting activities and often makes time to go fishing. 

Fishing is a sport that provides several different health benefits. Because fishing takes place outdoors, and is usually done in the sun, fishermen get a boost in their vitamin D levels. Vitamin D helps the body regulate calcium, and is also known for creating a stronger immune system. This means individuals may be less likely to get sick throughout the year.

Fishing provides various mental health benefits, too. This is a sport that can take time and depends more on the fish and where they are active, rather than the fisherman trying to actively engage them. Individuals who go fishing regularly develop patience and find themselves calmer and more relaxed. Since being impatient can increase stress levels and lower the body’s immune system, learning how to be patient is a mental health benefit.
